Why Make the Change?
Current Climate
There is little doubt that the climate in clinical medicine has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, and whilst the number of hours worked by junior doctors has decreased, many facets of doctors working life have changed for the worse; limited opportunities, prescriptive training regimes, poor pay coupled with high debt. Compounded with the lack of continuity of care in the system, the career that most of us signed up for is substantially different than that of today.
Most importantly is the significant change that has occurred both in terms of medical training and the career structure of both junior and senior doctors. In return for the hard work, gruelling lifestyle, and relatively low pay, doctors have traditionally had good job security. This situation has now changed dramatically, and there is no longer any guarantee of future employment or career development in clinical medicine.
With a significant exodus of doctors unable to secure a training post, we help provide doctors with advice on the alternative range of careers that exist for outside of medicine, not only in the field of healthcare but also in more diverse areas of business and commerce.
We do not aim to encourage doctors to leave medicine, but rather offer alternatives to those who wish to pursue other avenues whilst continuing to contribute positively towards changing medicine and the delivery of healthcare on a global scale.
Opportunities outside clinical medicine
The opportunities for medical doctors outside clinical medicine are extremely diverse. As a doctor you have the opportunity to be involved in health care outside the field of clinical medicine, making a profound difference on a far wider scale whilst being paid appropriately for doing so.
The scientific training we have all received allows us access to some top-level positions involving the life sciences industry. With the increased level of globalisation, opportunities exist beyond Europe and the UK, and provide the excitement and challenge of working abroad.
In essence, doctors have the ability to leverage their medical skills to make a much bigger difference to the progression of healthcare and clinical science.
The system in the UK is such that many doctors find it very difficult to leave the small world of the institutionalised NHS, as they feel they are 'selling out'. But quite to the contrary, those that have the desire to lead and make a positive impact on medicine and healthcare both globally and regionally must consider leaving the 'front line' of clinical medicine and consider an alternative way forward.
There are many options for this transition, from working as a management consultant developing innovate changes in healthcare strategy to operating as a life science venture capitalist, who funds new biotechnology companies in their aims to develop emerging and innovative technologies.
Within the UK and globally, there are insufficient numbers of doctors in high level positions, and introducing members of the medical community to these 'high-flying' roles helps to raise our profile and allows us the opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of medicine and healthcare in the UK, Europe and beyond.
